Mapletree Industrial Trust (MIT) will be developing a new data centre building for Equinix Singapore (“Equinix”). Known as SG3, this building will be Equinix’s 3rd data centre in Singapore and will allow it to cater to the strong growing demand for premium interconnection and data centre services here.
On 18 April 2013, Equinix held a groundbreaking ceremony to mark the start of construction of the building. The groundbreaking ceremony was graced by Mr Leong Keng Thai, Deputy Chief Executive of Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore (IDA).
The $108m project will be situated within one-north and consists of a seven-storey high specification building with a gross floor area of approximately 385,000 sqft. It is easily accessed via major expressways such as Ayer Rajah Expressway and Pan Island Expressway, and is within close proximity to one-north and Buona Vista Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) Stations.
The commitment from Equinix demonstrates its confidence in MIT's development capabilities in customizing high specification industrial facilities. Such Build-to-Suit solutions allow companies to focus on their core business while MIT takes care of capital expenditure and development process.
The facility is expected to be completed in the second half of 2014. Equinix will occupy the entire building on a 20-year lease term. The new IBX data center will provide 5,000 cabinets over multiple phases, significantly expanding Equinix’s presence in Singapore to better meet customer demand. Equinix is a global interconnection and data centre company routing more than 90% of the world’s internet traffic over 900 telecommunication exchanges.
The Equinix Data Centre is MIT’s second data centre development after its first data centre facility built for Tata Communications in Paya Lebar iPark. The latest build-to-suit project will further strengthen MIT’s foothold in the data centre segment.
